A Passion For Robots:
Husband & Wife Team - Jas Kaur and Gurdeep Singh
JESSICA WHEELER
Introducing a husband and wife team who are solving problems for others … using robots.
From the outside, Singh Automation looks like just another manufacturing business on Sprinkle Road in Portage, Michigan, USA. But its unassuming buildings are home to something special.
Husband and wife team Jas Kaur and Gurdeep Singh started the business together.
Their motto -- "We make robots"
The pair met while students at Western Michigan University. Both were here studying from Punjab.
"We both were dancing on the dance floor and we kind of clicked,” said Jas.
"I said what is your name? And I couldn't even hear so we just kept dancing,” said Gurdeep.
That dance turned into a relationship. They were married the next year, and after each working for other large corporations, they took a chance on what they consider the American dream -- starting their own business.
"This was always in the back of our mind - how do we do something that we're passionate about,” said Gurdeep.
"We always kind of talked about it from day one,” said Jas.
Now they have their own business with a team Gurdeep calls building innovative solutions.
"Whether it is a small company or a big operation, everyone has a problem that needs to be solved. And we find a solution for it,” said Gurdeep.
With the help of their team they build a variety of robots.
"It could be something to do with healthcare, it could be food processing, it could be something in a factory for automotive parts; we can do a variety of things,” said Gurdeep.
Robots like an automated chip fryer for a local restaurant chain, tables for local physical therapists and even fun claw machines for neighborhood parties.
They say their solutions save jobs.
"Innovative solutions, it's hard to compete with that and that helps the company keep the jobs here,” said Gurdeep.
And help others achieve their American dream too.
"Robots help to keep jobs right here in the United States and we're passionate about that,” he adds.
As for working and living together? They tell us they're like a well-oiled machine.
"We have different job responsibilities,” said Jas.
And they hope to keep building on those dreams as their company continues to expand.
