Lt Brian Murphy, Selected The Chic Sikh of 2012, Responds

Lieutenant BRIAN MURPHY

Thank you for awarding me the title of The Chic Sikh of 2012 .

It was an honor and an unbelievable privilege to be nominated in the same category as Bhai Satwant Singh, President of the Oak Creek Gurdwara, who displayed great bravery. The inspirational musician Manika Kaur and the survivors of the 1984 pogroms were also amazing nominees who I believe deserve this prestigious award above me.

I am truly humbled to have been presented with this award.

The fact that this award has been given to a non-Sikh shows the tenet of serving man as a whole, no matter what his beliefs.

I feel glad to have done something for such a wonderful people. I have had the opportunity of meeting so many Sikhs from not only the Oak Creek Gurdwara but across the United States, Canada, India and beyond. The outpourings of well wishes and blessings have been of immeasurable assistance as I have worked diligently to get well. I cannot thank everyone enough.

I have stated from the beginning that I was only doing my job, the same job that every Sikh has taken upon himself or herself, to serve and protect their fellow man.

Please accept my gratitude for the recognition of doing my duty to the best of my ability. I want to thank you and wish you all the best.

God Bless each of you ...

Dear Lt. Brian Murphy: In honoring you, we are honoring ourselves and celebrating all that is selfless, divinely-inspired, reassuring, liberating, and emancipating in human nature. Your words and response offer a sense of moral responsibility to all God's children placed at a person's or organization's crossroads and deliver the mandated mission and solemn commitment made at the time of entering a profession. We are saluting a fellow American who in spirit, thought, and deed embodies that amazing spirit and courage of conviction in a difficult and dangerous assignment, and demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice his or her all in the line of duty or a righteous encounter. You, Sir, have done that with incredible grace and have rightly earned the respect, support, and prayers of millions across the human universe. We have marveled at your courage, deep humility, and personal gratitude. For us, you valiantly responded to a dangerous situation for Sikh worshipers and saved many innocent lives. You have set an example of doing what is right and honorable for others you did not know. You have introduced Sikhs, the Sikh faith, and community to millions who followed the tragic event in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Now, the Sikhs have responded with a spontaneous outpouring of love and thanksgiving for your act of heroism that reminds us of the celebrated braves of Sikh history. We are praying for your complete recovery and continued blessings. You, Sir are a symbol of what is reassuring and morally-responsible for law-enforcement officers and all servant-leaders who take an oath to serve and safeguard lives. You are not just a hero for the entire Sikh nation, you are what is right, good, uplifting, and inspiring for countless millions. May God bless you, your family, and all those who put their lives on line to serve and keep us safe. Thank you.
