Presenting The Chic Sikh of The Year 2010

This is the third year in a row that we have asked our world-wide readers to propose the names of those men, women, children, groups, institutions or corporations - Sikh or non-Sikh - who they feel deserve to be named THE CHIC SIKH OF THE YEAR 2010.

As always, the response from across the diaspora over the course of two months has been thoughtful, spirited and enthusiastic.'s selection panel has struggled with the excellent list (see below) of possible awardees during the last few days, and has now selected one who single-handedly exemplifies the 12 months of challenges and issues, hopes and aspirations, the strengths and commitment, displayed by Sikhs around the world.

The Chic Sikh of the Year 2010 is Sardar JARNAIL SINGH, the journalist who is now known around the world by the moniker, "The Lion of Delhi".

He has inspired us with his willingness to stand up for what is right, even against heavy odds, not unlike a modern-day David against the Goliath of the Indian State.

He has shown us outstanding bravery and selflessness in his public and well-publicized challenge of the Indian Government's Home Minister, as the latter lied and obfuscated during a press conference over his government's failure (over the course of 25 years) to address the demands for justice vis-à-vis the crimes of 1984.

He has daringly, despite death threats and personal attacks, continued his strategic advocacy through well-thought-out writings and speeches.

We at joins Sikhs from around the world in saluting him and wishing him chardi kalaa and God-speed.

[The list of past winners includes - Harvinder Singh Phoolka (Human Rights Advocate), Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, SALDEF, Saran Singh (Editor, The Sikh Review), The Sikh Coalition and United Sikhs.]

Chic Sikh of the year! I just don't know how to react. If I could just become a true Sikh in my life, it would then be a great achievement. [EDITOR: Links to Jarnail Singh's speech on 1984]: Part-1: Part-2: Part-3: Part-4: Part-5: Part-6:
