Two Historic Firsts:
Britain Elects First Female and First Turbaned Sikh-Britons To Parliament
JEN MILLS, et al
The first female Sikh MP and the first turbaned Sikh MP have been elected to the British parliament.
Both from the Labour Party, Preet Kaur Gill, 44, will represent Birmingham Edgbaston and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi will represent Slough.
The results have been celebrated as ‘historic’ in an election where Labour did much better than many had expected.
It was heralded as ‘victory for Sikh representation in the UK parliament’.
Preet Kaur claimed an emphatic victory, taking 24,124 votes, a majority of almost 7,000 ahead of the Conservatives' Caroline Squire, up 10 per cent from 2015.
Harjinder Singh Kukreja @SinghLions tweeted:
Princess Sophia Duleep Kaur would be so proud today. She fought for women's right to vote & a Sikh woman #PreetGill got elected as MP #Sikhs
Tanmanjeet Singh won a huge majority of 16,998. He has a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with Management Studies from University College London, studied applied statistics at Keble College, Oxford, and an M.Phil. in the history and politics of South Asia from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

Election of two new Sikh-Briton MPs, Preet Kaur and Tanmanjit Singh, is a great day for us all. We have two keshadharis and one turban shining in the British Parliament. In a Global Sikh Conference I had urged the delegates from Britain to join together and get their members elected to their Parliament since in previous elections none of the Sikhs had been successful and I had been saddened by it. Preet and Tanamanjit have done us all proud. Many, many congratulations and good wishes for their future. May God bless more Sikhs to enter their respective parliaments around the world as well.
