A Mother's Blessing

Translated from Gurbani by GURMEET KAUR

Yesterday, on October 19, 2011, my son Angad Singh turned 18. The following blessing - composed by Guru Arjan in Raag Gujri [GGS:496] - is offered here in translation to commemorate the milestone.

poota maata ki assees ...

Meditate on such a One

Obliterate shortcomings

Redeem the legacy

With His presence in your being

In continuum

Through Infinity

O my child,

This is your mother’s blessing:

May you never forsake Him

Even for an instant

Dwell in his presence

Ever and forever

May the Guru by his grace

Bestow upon you:

The kinship of saintly souls

A swaddle of honor

The sustenance of adoration

Each and every day

May you drink

The ambrosia of Naam

Delighting eternally

And in the field of ethereal play

Your longings fulfilled

As worries alight away

Like a bumble bee

May your mind hum

By the lotus of Lord’s feet

Like a song-bird

Rejoicing the rain drop

O Nanak,

Yoke thy servant unto thee.

"Blessed is the mother who gave birth; blessed and respected is the father of one who serves the True Guru and finds peace. Arrogance and pride are banished from within; standing at the Lord's door, the humble devotee serves Him; therein they find the treasures of excellence." [GGS:32.12]] Angad, "may you never forsake Him even for an instant, dwell in his presence ever and forever"! With lots of blessings and love.
