Talvin Singh's Electronic Brilliance

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Here's another dude kicking the heck out of notions of what "world music" really is.

Sikh-Briton Talvin Singh is a tabla player.

Simple, right?

But he's also a DJ and mixer extraordinaire you should go see in part because he has taken Indian classical music and dragged it, kicking and screaming, into Hipsterland.

Over his more than two decades as a tastemaker, he's worked with everyone from Sun Ra to Madonna, rappers and qawwali performers.

The opportunity to see him in our neck of the woods is rare, but he performed in Chicago (Illinois, U.S.A.) last night, with a coterie of DJs and electronica types.

How to think of this music? Intelligently ambient, full of exotic texture, sound and melody that washes over you. A happy case in which ambient doesn't mean boring.

Perhaps sikhchic.com could provide a link to Talvin Singh's website/ facebook/ myspace/ twitter page so that we could hear his music? Better yet, how about a 30 second preview on your site, so we can get a taste?
