by PAUL SABHARWAL

Friday, June 1, 2007, was a historic day for California State University East Bay and the Bay Area Sikh Community.

During their 50th Anniversary celebrations, the University inaugurated its new President, Dr. Mohammad H. Qayoumi, who in turn announced the institution of the "Dr. Ranjit Singh Sabharwal Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies".

The event was attended by about 2500 people, including the presidents and chancellors of the 23 campuses of the California State University system ("CalState" - the largest university system in the world), as well as a number of presidents from other universities, and a variety of political leaders.

In announcing his plans to globalize the learning experience at CalState, Dr. Qayoumi proclaimed the formation of the Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies.

The evening Gala Event was attended by about 350 people; among them were various business leaders and prominent individuals.

The evening began with an Ardaas (invocation) by Sardar Jagmohan Singh.

Dr. Qayoumi is lovingly referred to by university personnel as "Mo, with a lot of MoMentum". He spoke about Guru Nanak's philosophy, and he highlighted his speech by repeating the adage: "Baba Nanak Shah Faqir, Hindu ka Guru, Mussalman ka Peer".

Over dinner, Dr. Qayoumi further elaborated on the mandate of the new Chair, and spoke at length about Prof. Sabharwal's contributions to the University and the community at large.

The events were well attended by members of the Sikh-American community, including those representing The Sikh Foundation International, the Sikh Sports Association of USA, and the Punjabi Education & Cultural Foundation.

Great. Since the message of Sikhism is a universal one, it needs to be shared with the world. This is a step in the right direction.
