Jagmeet Singh Named Deputy Leader of Ontario Political Party

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Ontario Member of Parliament (MPP) Jagmeet Singh has been named Deputy Leader of the province’s New Democratic Party (NDP) by party leader Andrea Horvath today.

The NDP has a 20-member caucus in the legislature. Jagmeet has been the elected representative of the Bramalea-Gore-Malton riding for the last four years.

Recently, national New Democratic Leader Tom Mulcair’s made overtures to Jagmeet to run federally this year, but the latter has chosen to stick around in Queen’s Park, the seat of the Ontario Government in Canada.

“I’m blown away and I’m really thankful for the position,” Jagmeet Singh told reporters Monday.

“I would never have thought that a little kid from Windsor, Ontario, would end up being a deputy leader of a provincial party one day, so it’s a great honour,” he said.

Jagmeet had been dodging questions from the media -- in calls, emails, and texts -- about his political future for the past month amid rumours he would jump to federal politics.

He finally confirmed Monday that he’s “not running federally.”

Jagmeet ran and lost for former federal leader Jack Layton’s NDP in the May 2011 election, then switched to the provincial scene for the October 2011 campaign and won.

A political pioneer, he is the first turban-wearing Sikh to serve as an MPP in Ontario.

Not too long ago, Jagmeet was also named one of the 50 Most Influential People of Toronto.

And he was personally photographed by pop star Bryan Adams to appear on the cover of Toronto Life‘s Stylebook, which then crowned him “The most stylish politician in the country.” [Please see detail from the photo-shoot, bottom-most image on the right.]

Jagmeet Singh is a very humble, cheerful and super nice person. The world needs such politicians. I, with my family, wish him every success in life.

Jagmeet has proven to be an asset of the Sikh community in Canada. Unlike many other politicians and so-called 'leaders' in the community in Canada who just rose to look after their own interests, Jagmeet stood for the community. He is genuine, has great potential, is hard working. We must all support him. I will suggest to him to have a team of intellectuals who should feed him ideas and he can be the spearhead. My prediction is that he will go places and is destined to serve his nation well. God bless Jagmeet.
