Most of us lead ordinary lives, oblivious of earth-shattering and life-transforming events that go on all around us, all the time. I particularly look forward to reading your pieces, because you capture those same 'ordinary' moments and squeeze so much meaning out of them. Just like this piece ... Enjoyed every line of it, and learned so much from it. Oh, please do go back to your D-A-I-L-Y postings!

There's no doubt about it: we as a community can achieve anything we want. Back in 1960, we did -- as the events touched upon by this story attest -- even though we were led by very inadequate leaders then. We can do it now. Not with leaders, good or bad ... it's the people who do it. Always.

Our daughter Dr. Simran lives in Kolkata and often nips into Kuala Lumpur for 2 to 3 days for any slightest reason. In this case we were having the usual roster of Sukhmani Sahib Paatth. Thanks to Air Asia's daily flight to Kuala Lumpur. It is a sort of bus trip that is just 3 hours away. She tells us that when in Kolkata, her first home is of S. Saran Singh (Editor, The Sikh Review); Simran is the in-house doctor. Shammi, S, Saran Singh's daughter, has become the elder sister. In S. Saran Singh ji's house, the other household name is 'Tapishar', aka T. Sher Singh, since his days at Patna where S. Saran Singh as an IAS officer was a regular visitor to Sher's household. To jail, Sher Singh's Pitaji, for any reason ... be it Punjabi Suba or brandishing his pistol to the minister who tried to get tyres free of cost, was out of the question.

We have been reduced to "weeping Toms" by self-proclaimed leaders. We have to suffer, organize morchas and go to jail for the smallest of demands. Why can't we be the masters of our own destiny?

After all the fights, struggles and sacrifices for the Punjabi language, nothing infuriates me more when the urban Sikh Delhites generally respond in Hindi when spoken to in Punjabi. Take away the language of a people and you leave them bereft of identity and culture. That was the policy of the Indian state towards Punjabis. When it came to declaring the mother tongue after all the 'morchas', the Hindus of Punjab decided to disown their mother tongue, and it is sad to see some urban Sikhs doing the same now. Outside India, Sikhs have taken great pains to learn and keep their language and culture alive despite all odds.

Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to make Punjab an autonomous state. We need a leader today. I hope someone like Baba Iqbal Singh ji will take the lead.
